Soul Food Green Beans Recipe

This is a southern style green beans recipe. It's cooked low and slow, flavored with bacon, onions, and fresh garlic.

Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon diced
  • 2 lbs fresh green beans trimmed and chopped in half
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon seasoning salt
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 4-6 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 b quartered red potatoes

Instructions

  • In large pot, cook over medium heat bacon until crisp.
  • With a slotted spoon, remove half of bacon and set aside.
  • Add green beans to pot with remaining bacon. Stir to coat with rendered bacon fat.
  • Add in onions, garlic, and seasonings, stir until well combined.
  • Slowly pour in chicken broth, enough to cover the green beans and bring up to a boil
  • Place lid on pot and simmer on low to medium heat (do not boil) for 30-45 minutes or until green beans are just tender and no longer have a crisp bite.
  • Add in potatoes and allow to simmer another 15-20 minutes until potatoes are softened
